I attended Perryville Methodist Church between about 1952 and 1961. I found it to be a very accepting church of me and the rest of my family. I was a member of the scout troop 144 and explorer post 144 and learning many useful skills there . In time I became an Eagle Scout.
At least some of the time my mother sang in the choir and my father taught Sunday School and served on the Offical Board.
One of my sad memories of Perry Methodist Church was attending the funeral of my high school friend Jackie Cullum and seeing his mother sing at his funeral service. It should be the other way around.
I not only sang the song "Old Rugged Cross" which was and is one of my favorates, I also sometimes thought about the words in that and other songs I sung.
I got into trouble paying attention to the words in "Jesus Loves the Little Children of the World".
When I was a teenager, in a Sunday school class I stated that when I reached adulthood I would not automatically rule out a black woman as a possible marriage partner.
Since Perryville High School was segregated and most of the restaurants on
Route 40 had signs stating "Colored Served to Take Out Only", this was considered to be a very strange thing to say, but my fellow students put it down to one more example of my strangeness and continued to accept me anyway.Added April 25, 2017 by Russell Williams
